Zippy’s in Las Vegas – A Talk Story

When Zippy’s first opened in Hawaiʻi back in 1966, nobody imagined that one day you’d be able to get chili and rice in the middle of the Mojave Desert. But like a lot of Hawaiians, Zippy’s eventually made the move to Las Vegas — and in many ways, it feels like the islands followed.

Zippy’s was founded by two brothers, Francis and Charles Higa, on South King Street in Honolulu. What started as one small neighborhood diner slowly grew into one of the most iconic local brands in Hawaiʻi. Generations grew up eating Zip Pacs after school, grabbing saimin after the beach, or meeting family at Zippy’s because “everybody knows where that is.”

Today, Zippy’s is still family-owned under FCH Enterprises, now led by second-generation CEO Jason Higa. That’s the part people respect the most — it never got sold off to some mainland corporation. It’s still a Hawaiʻi company, run by Hawaiʻi people, just expanding the reach.

Las Vegas became the natural next step.

The first mainland Zippy’s opened in 2023 at Arroyo Crossing in southwest Las Vegas. For Hawaiians living in Nevada, that opening felt historic. People lined up for hours. Some cried. Some brought their kids just to show them what they grew up with.

Then came the second location on South Hualapai Way in Summerlin South in 2025, followed by the Southeast location on South Eastern Avenue later that year. Each new store made it easier for locals across the valley to access a little piece of home without driving across town.

In January 2026, Zippy’s opened its newest location at West Charleston Boulevard in Summerlin — the fourth in the Las Vegas area. By this point, Zippy’s wasn’t just a restaurant anymore. It had become a community hub: business meetings, family parties, radio interviews, local DJ meetups, and late-night talk story sessions over chili and fried chicken.

And now, the biggest move yet is happening.

Zippy’s is currently building its first North Las Vegas location on Camino Al Norte. For years, people on the north side had to drive 30–40 minutes to reach a Zippy’s. This new location changes that. It marks the full spread of Zippy’s across the entire valley — south, west, east, Summerlin, and now North Las Vegas.

From one diner in Honolulu to five locations in Las Vegas, the story stays the same.

Same recipes. Same local-style service. Same feeling when you walk in and smell garlic, soy sauce, and rice.

Zippy’s in Vegas isn’t about expansion for the sake of money. It’s about community. It’s about Hawaiians who moved away but still needed something familiar. It’s about locals discovering island food for the first time. And it’s about proving that even in the desert, you can still find home.

As people like to say now:

Las Vegas isn’t just the ninth island. It’s officially a Zippy’s island.
